Skipper – Peter Hopps

Sam is skippered by co-owner Peter Hopps. Peter is a hugely experienced sailor and racer who has competed in 15 Fastnet Races, successfully completing all of them except for 1979 when the fleet was decimated by the storm that made the race’s reputation. Peter is also an RYA Yachtmaster Instructor and Examiner.

Peter qualified as an Ocean Yachtmaster Instructor in 1998 and is one of the most experienced in the UK. He is also an Examiner all the way up to Yachtmaster Ocean level. Last year Peter was proud to have been the instructor for Hannah Stodel when she went on to be awarded ‘Yachtmaster of the Year’ by the RYA.

Peter’s extensive sailing career has included much short-handed sailing including 2-handed Trans-Atlantic Race (1st in Class), 2-handed Round Britain Race (3rd in Class in ’85, 2nd in Class in ’89), Single-Handed Trans-Atlantic Race (3rd in Class) and 5 more single-handed trans-Atlantic crossings. He still races regularly offshore at a high level having competed in all 10 RORC Caribbean 600 Races, this year as co-Skipper on Ballytrim, coming 2nd in IRC Class 2 and 1st Swan Class. He followed this up by co-skippering Ballytrim to 2nd in Class in the Newport to Bermuda Race. He has completed 13 Fastnet Races, 10 as skipper winning the Hobo Trophy for the best One-Design, and several medallions. In 2014 he skippered ‘Saga’ to 1st in Class 1 in the RORC Round Britain and Ireland Race.

Inshore, Peter has won races in Cowes Week, Antigua Sailing Week, Cork Week, Grenada Week along with many others.

Peter is happy and willing to share his extensive knowledge whether it’s on your own boat, a charter boat or on Sam of Hamble of which he is a part owner. Peter regularly spends most of the winter in the Caribbean, based in Antigua.
